Creating Safer Routes
to School

Some 25,000 child pedestrians are injured by motor vehicles each year. This is unacceptable. To create safer routes to school, we must:
  • identify and fix hazardous conditions along routes to school;
  • compel drivers to obey pedestrian laws and speed limits;
  • provide well-designed, accessible, and, where needed, monitored crosswalks;
  • slow down traffic in neighborhoods and school zones; and
  • persuade our elected officials and public servants to support these efforts.

Advocating for safer routes to school is easier than you think. Try it!

REPORT PEDESTRIAN HAZARDS ONLINE
REPORT PEDESTRIAN HAZARDS ONLINE
Pedestrian hazards along the school route (such as broken sidewalks and faded crosswalks) get fixed only if you report them. Take action now by emailing the agencies and people responsible for building, enforcing, and repairing your pedestrian environment.
TICKET SIDEWALK PARKERS TICKET SIDEWALK PARKERS
Parking on sidewalks denies access to pedestrians and permanently damages concrete. Print these realistic, but fake, parking tickets on yellow paper and "ticket" the violators along your KidsWalk route to school. The fine for parking on sidewalks is $100 in the City of Atlanta; fines may differ in other jurisdictions.
NEIGHBORHOOD PACE CAR PROGAM NEIGHBORHOOD PACE CAR PROGAM
The Neighborhood Pace Car Program empowers people to calm traffic on residential streets and around schools dramatically, immediately, and free of charge. Pace Car drivers set the speed of traffic by driving within the speed limit and displaying the official Pace Car sticker on their vehicles.
GDOT'S PEDESTRIAN AND STREETSCAPE GUIDE GDOT'S PEDESTRIAN AND STREETSCAPE GUIDE
Sponsored by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), the Pedestrian & Streetscape Guide provides direction to transportation professionals and citizens like you regarding the design and construction of pedestrian facilities. Learn all about school related pedestrian improvements.
WRITING FOR CHANGE WRITING FOR CHANGE
Grass-roots letter writing is the key to effective advocacy. After all, elected officials aren't mind readers! FACT: Focused, well-written letters to local decision-makers have the power to create change. Give your letter its greatest impact and get results by following these seven tips.
SLOW DOWN FANS SLOW DOWN FANS
PEDS provides Slow Down fans to schools participating in KidsWalk. You can also use this template to print your own. Very popular with the kids, these fans send a clear message to drivers and keep you cool, too. Kids love to wave these fans at passing cars, that is, if they can ever get them out of their parents' hands
