KidsWalk integrates safety, health, fitness, traffic relief, and environmental awareness under one program. It is an opportunity to work closely with your school, your community and your local government to create a healthy lifestyle for children and a safer, cleaner environment for everyone. KidsWalk also addresses the safety concerns of parents by encouraging greater enforcement of traffic laws, educating the public, and exploring ways to create safer streets. The program is offered by PEDS, free of charge, to schools in metro Atlanta, Georgia.

KidsWalk is creating Safer Routes to School by:

• Organizing walking routes to help children, supervised by parents (pdf), have safe, navigable trips on foot to schools;
• Conducting walkability audits (pdf) that inform transportation engineers and elected officials about needed improvements;
• Enabling parents, school administrators, and others to initiate safety improvements by reporting pedestrian hazards online;
• Facilitating increased enforcement of speed limits (pdf) and crosswalk laws (pdf) among participatins schools;
• Enlisting parents and other trusted adults to walk with kids (pdf) as they journey to school;
• Providing fun incentives, such as water bottles and pedometers for kids who walk to participating schools;
• Educating communities about the benefits of walking;
• Providing guidance and promotional materials for schools organizing International Walk to School Day events;
• Sharing success stories among participating schools;
